Answer 1: focuses on set and costume
How does mise-en-scene work to create effects that fit in with the action adventure genre?
The set in this extract consists of two ships, one is a pirate ship and the other is a British navy ship. The mise-en-scene creates a clear contrast between the two. The pirate ship’s sails are dirty and full of holes whilst the hero’s ship is very grand. It is immediately clear that the pirate ship belongs to the villains and that a battle is about to happen. The pirates raise the skull and cross bone flag, which instantly connotes danger and violence. This fits the genre as the mise-en-scene creates excitement as the scene builds up to a fierce battle, which is typical of action adventure films.
The costumes clearly define each character in the extract. The pirate captain is wearing ragged clothing that is all black. His appearance is scruffy and haggard which instantly indicates that he is the antagonist in the extract.
Answer 2: focuses on props
How does mise-en-scene work to create effects that fit in with the action adventure genre?
Props are used in the extract. Weapons such as swords, knives and canons are authentic pirate weapons. The canons are loaded with anything the heroes could find. This is typical of pirate films and the audience watches as cannons are used to create holes in the sides of both ships. There is even a comic moment where the fork becomes stuck in a pirate’s glass eye.
