In this extract the stage is immediately set for the fierce and violent battle, which is typical of the action adventure genre. Katniss and the other tributes have been transported to an exotic/ tropical location and they are all stood in a circle facing the cornucopia where there are many weapons and other supplies. Violence is a typical convention of the genre, especially when it takes place in an exotic or unusual location as it creates excitement and fear of the unknown. The tension is increased further by the agonizingly long countdown. This theme of a race against time is also a genre convention and creates a sense of urgency and panic in the audience.
Katniss Everdeen is a typical action adventure hero. She is clearly the main protagonist as the audience sees much of the action from her point of view as she views her surroundings and the supplies in front of her. She is clearly very heroic, as she does not join in the brutal fighting; instead she chooses to run into the trees. She is clearly shocked at the sheer violence of the other tributes, and stares at the murders in horror. This indicates that she is not evil and kills unnecessarily and is upset by death. These are typical heroic traits. And the audience will instantly identify with her and want her to succeed.
